World champion Black Caviar extended her unbeaten record with a second G1 victory in the VRC Lightning Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.
The Lightning was her 19th victory in a row and it also marked the start of the 10-race Global Sprint Challenge.
Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) was coming back from 1400m to 1000m in the space of a week and was always travelling sweetly down the straight course. Settled on the inside of Hay List, she had to lift a gear to see off her old nemesis to win by nearly two lengths.
The wonder mare clocked 55.53s which was just a fraction outside Special’s long-standing track record of 55s set in 1988. “She’s a freak and Luke (Nolen) rode her accordingly,” trainer Peter Moody said. “She’s a champion and loves the straight here at Flemington.”
Black Caviar now shares the record of 19 straight wins set by Desert Gold and Gloaming 90 years ago. She will continue racing for the Global Sprint Challenge in the G1 Golden Shaheen in Dubai and the G1 Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot.
Gilgai Farm sold Black Caviar for $210,000 through the Swettenham Stud draft at the 2008 Inglis Premier yearling sale in Melbourne.
Adam Sangster’s operation will offer another stellar group of yearlings at this year’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands and two close relations to Black Caviar will also go under the hammer at Melbourne Premier;
