Blackfriars has dominated Perth’s three year-old division this season and he dictated again in the LR Belmont Guineas (1600m) on Saturday.
Blackfriars colt Rohan split his rivals in the straight to score a first-up win over Accelarometer (McFlirt) and Black Uma (Blackfriars). He was resuming after an autumn campaign that included victories in the LR Roberts Quality and G2 WA Derby.
Blackfriars stands at Durham Lodge and he has sired 20 individual three year-old winners of 34 races this season. Besides Rohan, his other highlights have been Pop Culture (G3 WA Oaks & LR Ascot 1000 Guineas) and Full Reign (LR Challenge Stakes).
His city winners with black-type placings to their credit include Mendicity (LR Burgess Queen Quality) and Shining Knight (LR Fairetha Stakes).
Rohan (3c Blackfriars – Voltage Pak by Carry A Smile) has now banked $400,000 for Lark Hill trainer Vaughn Sigley and owners Glen Kettlewell and Warren Allen. He was bred and sold by Durham Lodge for $61,000 at the 2010 Perth Magic Millions.
“He’s a great animal and it’s a privilege to have a horse like him in the stable,” Sigley said. “He’s still growing and developing and is going to be a much better four year-old.”
Rohan will have one more run in the G3 Strickland Stakes (2000m) on July 7 before a spell and he’s shaping up as a front-line candidate for the G2 Perth Cup (2400m).
Blackfriars gelding God Has Spoken won last year’s Strickland Stakes and he returned to finish second in the Perth Cup. Rohan can go one better for Sigley and his connections in Perth’s signature event on New Year’s Day.
