Blue Bunting wins Curragh classic

Sheikh Mohammed claimed an Irish Oaks hat-trick in the 1980s but had been winless in the classic until Blue Bunting scored in a blanket finish at the Curragh on Sunday.

Blue Bunting (3f Dynaformer–Miarixa by Linamix) doubled up at the elite level with a powerful finish to claim Banimpire (Holy Roman Emperor) and Wonder of Wonders (Kingmambo).

The Saratoga Sale graduate had won the English 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in May before finishing a controversial fourth in the English Oaks at Epson Downs.  “The best filly won although at one stage I was struggling behind the others,” jockey Frankie Dettori said.  “I switched her to the outside and that won me the race.”

Blue Bunting broke her maiden at Doncaster last August and finish her juvenile season with a Listed victory in the Montrose Stakes at Newmarket.  She won the English 1000 Guineas first-up this term but was denied third place in the Oaks when Dettori dropped his hands before the finish.

Blue Bunting is a half-sister to winners by Dr Fong and Gulch.  Their dam is an unraced half-sister to French Listed winner Marque Royale (Royal Academy).  She was a $200,000 buy at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale.

Blue Bunting is by Three Chimneys stallion Dynaformer (Roberto) who is also the sire of 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americain.

Sheikh Mohammed had won previous Irish Oaks with Unite (1987), Diminuendo & Melodist (Dead-heat in 1988) and Alydaress (1989).
