Exceed And Excel continued his dominance of feature two-year-old races around the world with a Group 1 quinella in the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
His unbeaten filly Earthquake scored by a long neck from Exceed And Excel colt Jabali.
It was Exceed And Excel’s second Group 1 juvenile quinella following the 2013 Golden Slipper when Overreach defeated Sidestep. Adding to Saturday’s remarkable achievement was third-placegetter Cornrow who is from stakes winning Exceed And Excel mare Baby Corn.
Despite a wide draw, Earthquake was still sent out favourite in the Blue Diamond and did not let her supporters down. “I don’t think she’s peaked yet,” Darley trainer Peter Snowden said. “It will be harder in the Golden Slipper but she’s got the necessary attributes to do it.”
Earthquake (2f Exceed And Excel – Cataclysm by Marauding) is a homebred for Sheikh Mohammed and is from a half-sister to stakes winners El Cambio and Complicate. Her dam Cataclysm has a yearling filly by Commands and foaled a Sepoy filly in the spring.
Darley colt Sepoy claimed the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper in 2011 and Earthquake has firmed to a $2.80 favourite to complete the double in the $3.50 million Golden Slipper on April 5.
Exceed And Excel has now sired 8 Group 1 winners. His first was Reward For Effort in the 2009 Blue Diamond Stakes.
