Tony Gollan can’t wait for the Brisbane winter carnival to arrive after watching his star sprinter Spirit Of Boom demolish his rivals at Eagle Farm on Australia Day.
Spirit Of Boom (3c Sequalo – Temple Spirit by Special Dane) equalled the class record for the QTIS XXXX Gold Handicap when he clocked 68.71s for 1200 metres on Wednesday.
The Toowoomba based trainer could hardly hide his delight after Spirit Of Boom bounced back to his best form following a last-start fifth to Torio’s Quest in the Magic Millions Guineas (1400m) earlier this month. “I’ve been saying all along this horse is better on top of the ground and he wasn’t suited by the slow track in the Magic Millions,” Gollan said at Eagle Farm. “He carried 58kgs and he made it look like he had 53kgs.”
Gollan always rated Temple Of Boom (Piccolo) as the best he had ever trained but has changed his mind and now ranks his younger half brother the better horse. Spirit Of Boom will be spelled immediately to concentrate on the Brisbane winter carnival. “I’ll get him ready for the Mick Dittman Plate which I won with Temple Of Boom last year,” he said. “He’ll then run in the Gold Coast Guineas.”
Eureka Stud’s Colin and Scott McAlpine bred Spirit Of Boom and they kept a share in the colt after he sold for $90,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale. He won the 2010 Magic Millions 2YO Classic Prelude and the Listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic and has now accrued over $290,000
