Breeders’ Cup – Colonel John retired to WinStar Farm

Colonel John has been retired and will begin his stallion career at WinStar Farm in Kentucky next year.  His final run was in last Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Classic in which he finished fifth behind the brilliant Zenyatta.

Colonel John (Tiznow) was a Group 1 winner of the Santa Anita Derby and the Travers Stakes at three.  His best effort this year at four came last month when narrowly beaten into second by Gitano Hernando in the Goodwood Stakes.

“I was around his sire Tiznow who was one of the most talented horses I have ever been associated with,” trainer Eoin Harty said.  “Colonel John has the same qualities as his sire, namely speed, class and durability.”

Colonel John won on cushion and dirt tracks as well as his only start on turf.  “He’s the most accomplished son of Tiznow to retire and we are proud to bring him home,” WinStar president Doug Cauthen added.  “He’s a big, athletic horse and has everything we are looking for in a classic sire prospect.”
