Noogoora Burr burst into contention for the $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic with a strong win in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Noogoora Burr (2g Royal Academy – Azalea by Marscay) wasn’t expected to trouble Sizzling but punters were left reeling when he held out the hot favourite by a half neck. He had won on debut at Eagle Farm in October and trainer David Lawlor has him right on target for the Magic Millions Classic.
The Royal Academy youngster is shaping as another of the great bargain buys of the Magic Millions. He was purchased from the draft of Widden Stud at January’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale for just $37,500.
He is a half-brother to five winners including the Gai Waterhouse trained Fleur Royale who was G1 placed in the 2006 Flight Stakes won by Cheeky Choice.
Noogoora Burr sent Royal Academy’s stakes winning score to 164. The Coolmore champion has sired the likes of Val Royal, Oscar Schindler, Serious Speed, Kenwood Melody, Top Hat and Black Caviar’s sire Bel Esprit.
Sizzling (Snitzel) wouldn’t have lost any admirers after coming from well back to fail narrowly. He’s looking for 1200 metres.
