Camelot consummate in Racing Post Trophy

Montjeu colt Camelot has been installed a $4 favourite for the 2012 English Derby after scoring a consummate victory in the G1 Racing Post Trophy (1600m) at Doncaster on Saturday.

The Coolmore colt was sent off at flip-of-the-coin odds despite racing first-up after a Leopardstown win at his only other start in July.

Camelot (2c Montjeu – Tarfah by Kingmambo) was always travelling like a winner and, when stoked up, had the race won in a matter of strides.  “He’s looked extraordinary all the way along and he’s unbelievable at home,” trainer Aidan O’Brien said.  “We’re looking forward to next year already.”

Montjeu has now sired 25 Group 1 winners and O’Brien was winning the Racing Post Trophy for the sixth time following Saratoga Springs (1997), Aristotle (1999), High Chaparral (2001), Brian Boru (2002) and St Nicholas Abbey (2009).

Camelot was a 525,000gns buy for Coolmore out of the 2010 Tattersalls October yearling sale.  His dam Tarfah won a G3 at Newmarket and Listed events at Ascot and Kempton.
