Caulfield hat-trick for Volcanic Ash

Magnus broke through $2 million in prizemoney this season when his four year-olds Volcanic Ash and Duke Of Brunswick fought out a thrilling finish to the Swettenham Stud Championship (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Volcanic Ash (4g Magnus – Silverbeat by Distant Music) scored by a nose to bring up a hat-trick of wins over 1400 metres at Caulfield.  “He had a beautiful run but was just held up for a couple of strides in the straight,” winning jockey Michael Dee said.  “I peeled off Duke Of Brunswick’s and he really hit the line once we were in the clear.”

Magnus stands at Eliza Park International and he is the third Victorian stallion to earn $2 million in progeny earnings this season following Written Tycoon and Reset.

Volcanic Ash has banked $233,000, including $59,000 in VOBIS bonuses, for owners David and Lynley Puglisi.  He cost $70,000 at the 2013 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale and Eliza Park International has catalogued his half-sister by Stratum as Lot 349 for the 2016 Melbourne Premier.

Their dam Silverbeat has also foaled Magnus stakes winner Alpha Beat (LR Adelaide Guineas).  They were bred by Dorrington Park’s Rob Crabtree who raced Magnus to a Group 1 victory in the AJC Galaxy.

Magnus has two colts entered for the Gold Coast Magic Millions starting on January 6 – Lot 374 is from Tasmanian Thousand Guineas winner Le Bel Away (Bel Esprit) and Lot 600 is out of Sydney Group 2 mare Shirl Pegasus (Fusaichi Pegasus).
