Cauthen (NZ) new favourite for Caulfield Guineas

Cauthen (NZ) is the new favourite for the G1 Caulfield Guineas after a resounding victory in the LR Mitchell McKenzie Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Saturday’s result saw him firm into $6 alongside Prince Harada at the head of markets for the Caulfield Guineas on October 12.

Cauthen (3c Darci Brahma – Minori Express by Green Line Express) also became the 11th stakes winner for his sire at Moonee Vallety.  The Oaks Stud based Darci Brahma (Danehill) has four crops of racing age and stands for a $40,000 (plus gst) service fee.

“He’s got plenty of upside,” trainer Andrew Campbell said.  “He’s still not wound right up yet.”

The (NZ) colt won by 8 lengths on debut at Te Rapa last month but found trouble in transit at his first Australian start at Moonee Valley on August 3.  “That’s the real Cauthen,” a relieved Campbell told AAP.  “It’s pleasing to see him do that and it makes life easier for us now.”

Cauthen turned the tables on front-runner Clevadude who beat him home at the Valley three weeks ago.  “He’s already looking for further than 1200m,” winning jockey James McDonald claimed.  “He’s big, he’s powerful and he’s got the right attitude to be a very good horse.”

The LR Henry Bucks Stakes at Flemington in a fortnight is the next step towards the Caulfield Guineas.  Cauthen cost $85,000 from Wentwood Grange at the 2012 NZB Karaka yearling sale.
