Warwick Stakes vindicates Veyron (NZ)

Trainer Linda Laing’s faith in Veyron (NZ) was vindicated when the Kiwi galloper caused an upset in the G2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) on Saturday.

A Group 1 field contested the Warwick Farm feature and the winner was virtually unwanted at a $21.

Front-runner Rain Affair was sent out an odds-on favourite but wasn’t allowed to enjoy any soft sectionals with Streama pushing him all the way.  At the business end, the pressure told on the leaders and Laing’s faith was finally rewarded in Australia.

“I’m definitely not surprised,” the Cambridge based trainer said.  “Australia didn’t get to see the best of him in the autumn.  After the George Ryder he got a foot injury so we took him home.

Veyron (8g Thorn Park – Over The Limit by Centro) has won at Group 1 level back home in the Easter Hcp (2), Waikato Draught Sprint, Haunui Farm Classic and Zabeel Classic.  “He will stay for the Chelmsford and the George Main Stakes,” Laing added.  “He will be entered for the Epsom but we will wait and see.”

The powerful chestnut is raced by owner-breeders Isabel and Alistaire Barker.  His second dam Limitless (Sir Tristram) won the 1987 Brisbane Cup when trained by Laing’s father Royce Dowling.

Windsor Park Stud’s former champion sire Thorn Park was put down in December 2012 after succumbing to navicular disease.
