More Than Ready has dominated the Australian 2yo sire ranks in recent years and that’s encouraged other studs to source the Southern Halo sireline.
There are Southern Halo stallions in every State and his lone representative in Victoria is Chatswood Stud newcomer Masterpiece. The Argentine bred Group 1 winner has his first Super VOBIS bred foals on the ground and the quality of that first crop has encouraged his owner Dennis Stogryn to raise the bar in 2010.
“Masterpiece has served upwards of 150 mares in his first two seasons in Victoria,” Stogryn recalled this week. “The majority of his bookings last year were by breeders who liked the look of his first foals. “By transferring to a mainstream commercial stud like Chatswood, he should receive even better opportunities in his third season.”
Masterpiece was bred at leading Argentine stud Haras La Quebrada and the ability inherent in his pedigree was on show from the outset. He won on debut as a two year-old before developing into a top class sprinter – miler on turf.
Masterpiece entered his name among Argentina’s top turf milers by scoring his Group 1 in the 2004 Gran Premio San Isidro in Buenos Aires. Piloted by Peruvian Jacinto Herrera, he put five lengths between the placegetters while covering the 1600m in 1:33.92s.
Masterpiece was campaigned by Stud Matty until he was exported to the USA to race for new owner Frank Alesia and trainer Peter Eurton.
The Southern Halo colt transferred his outstanding turf record of 12: 5-5-0 to California. He won first-up at Hollywood Park before adding a Listed victory in the Brubaker Hcp at Del Mar.
“He retired sound – there were no problems on that score,” Stogryn said. “And being a Southern Halo, he will provide a perfect cross for all those Danzig – Danehill mares out there.”
Stogryn and his Southern Hemisphere Bloodstock gallopers have enjoyed a good run with trainer Darren Weir this season winning with Royal Mail (Bianconi) and Kyiv City (Invincible Spirit).
His smart mare One Lucky Lady (Lucky Owns) completed a hat-trick at Ballarat, Seymour and Sandown this time last year and she returned to action at Kyneton recently after 10 months on the sidelines.
To help boost bookings in 2010, Stogryn and Chatswood owner Greg Willis have instigated a bonus scheme for breeders booking into Masterpiece.
