Choice cover for Brazilian Pulse

Group 1 winner Brazilian Pulse has been retired and covered by Arrowfield champion Redoute’s Choice.

The NZ bred filly was raced by Lorne Bloodstock’s Rohan Aujard and Rupert Legh before her recent sale to Japanese interests.

Brazilian Pulse (3f Captain Rio – Sharazad by Tenby) completed the G2 Wakeful Stakes – G1 Victorian Oaks this time last year and returned in the autumn for a G3 victory in the Keith Nolan Classic at Rosehill.

Paul Moroney purchased Brazilian Pulse for $26,000 from Raffles Farm at the 2009 NZB Karaka yearling sale.

She was bred by Freddy Lee and is by Westbury Stud’s Pivotal stallion Captain Rio.  Her dam Sharazad won over 2200m in Ireland and is related to iconic English Derby winner Shergar.

“Paul saw her pretty early on during his yearling tour and was always going to buy her,” trainer Mike Moroney recalled.  “He said she was a very good filly and we took his word for it.”

The Moroney brothers have maintained the Pulse connection with African Pulse who won the Schweppes Tonic 1000 at Flemington on Tuesday.

African Pulse (3c Johannesburg – Bunyah by Distant View) is also raced by Rohan Aujard along with a syndicate that includes David, Brenda and Paul Duchen.  He was a $130,000 buy at the 2010 NZB Karaka yearling sale.

The exciting colt is the latest feature winner bred in New Zealand by Peter and Joan Egan.  Based at Legacy Lodge, the Hamilton couple also bred G2 winner Flying Babe (Flying Spur) and Karaka Million winner Fort Lincoln (Charge Forward) by sending their mares to Arrowfield stallions.

Peter Egan was also a member of the syndicates that raced G1 winners St Reims (NZ Derby) and San Luis (Awapuni Sires’ Produce Stakes).

Paul Moroney bought African Pulse’s dam Bunyah on behalf of the Egans at the 2004 Tattersalls December Sale.  She was part of the Shadwell Estates consignment and cost 20,000 guineas.

The mare has a yearling colt by Lucky Unicorn but is empty this year after missing to Duke Of Marmalade.
