Classic Sale average up 5% on Day 1

The 2011 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale began on a buoyant note on Sunday when the average increased by more than 5% to $34,692.  The median was $30,000 on Day 1 with the clearance rate rising above 78%.

“The sale figures are slightly ahead of last year’s sale at the same stage which is a positive sign,” Inglis director Jonathan D’Arcy said.  “The strong median and clearance rate means vendors are meeting the market and are being rewarded for well presented yearlings.”

Flemington trainers Mat Ellerton and Simon Zahra bought a Stratum – Cinque Cavalli colt for $95,000.  Their Stratum filly Crystal Lily last year’s Golden Slipper and the latest buy is from Mossman mare Jargon.

Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds paid the same amount for Riverslea Farm’s Snitzel colt from the Woodman mare Keela.

An Encosta De Lago colt from the draft of Lomar Park Stud joined the other two at the top of the leader board when selling to Coolmore Stud’s Tom Magnier.  The colt is from Listed winning Arena mare My Lady’s Chamber who is a three-quarter-sister to G1 Coolmore Classic winner Regal Cheer.

Paul Moroney Bloodstock, which previously purchased Blue Diamond winner True Jewels from this sale for just $28,000, led the way among Sunday’s buyers, securing six lots for $204,000.

Southern Cross Breeders led turnover for vendors with five yearlings selling for $243,000.  The sale continues on Monday and Tuesday with horses passed in on Sunday still available for sale via the Inglis Make an Offer service.
