Lynward Park resident Trade Fair sired another classic winner in Italy on Sunday.

His Irish bred colt Al Rep sprinted to the lead a furlong from home in the G3 Premio Parioli (Italian 2000 Guineas) in Rome and then saw off a determined challenge from Duchamp (Vettori) to score by three-quarters of a length.

Al Rep (3c Trade Fair – Swizzle by Efisio) is raced by Scuderia Colle Papa and they also owned 2000 Italian 2000 Guineas winner Davide Umbro (In The Wings).  Their latest classic winner cost 6,500 pounds at the 2009 Doncaster September yearling sale.  

The Guineas was Al Rep’s fourth win in 8 starts.  He was a juvenile winner last year and returned this term to win over 1600m at Rome’s Capannelle course in February.  He was also successful at the same venue in the LR Premio Daumier over 1500m on April 3.

“We hoped he would be able to use his speed and he did,” trainer Daniele Camuffo said.  “No decision has been made with regard to future plans for the Derby.”

Worthadd (Dubawi) completed the Italian 2000 Guineas – Italian Derby double last year, however, Al Rep isn’t guaranteed to stay much further than a mile.  He is a half-brother to 1000m winner Pocket’s Pick (Exceed And Excel) and his dam hails from the family of smart sprinters Halmahera and Monsieur Bond.

Trade Fair’s first northern crop included classic filly Miss Starlight.  She won last year’s G3 Sheikh Hamdan Trophy in Germany and, after being sold to Gulf businessman Hassan Al Abdulmalik, won the Thoroughbred Derby Trial in Qatar.

Trade Fair is a Juddmonte homebred and won at Group 3 level in the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket in addition to a Group 1 placing in the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.

His first southern crop included the precocious filly Absolute Pleasure.  She scored on debut at Ascot this time last year and was also G2 placed in the Karrakatta Plate.  Trainer Trevor Andrews brought her back this season for three year-old wins at Ascot in November and March.

Trade Fair doesn’t have any southern bred two year-olds this season due to E.I. but he has a bumper crop of youngsters ready to run 2011-12.  Leading Perth agent John Chalmers bought two of his yearlings for $70K and $55K at February’s Perth Magic Millions.

Trade Fair (Zafonic) initially shuttled from Tweenhills Farm in Gloucestershire to John Yovich’s Evergreen Lodge in WA.  He was in quarantine in readiness to return to England last year when a syndicate headed by Lynward Park’s Ted van Heemst clinched a deal to stand him in WA on a permanent basis.
