Coast clear for Craigellachie

Gold Coast trainer Kelly Doughty may soon be eyeing bigger spoils for her talented three-year-old Craigellachie.

Craigellachie (3g Monashee Mountain – Jaina Solo by Baryshnikov) scored his third victory in the Hardings Hardware Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on November 20.  The winning prizemoney and $32,000 QTIS bonus took his career earnings to $65,600.

Winning jockey Ric McMahon was confident well before the home turn.  “They towed me into the race,” McMahon said.  “We were three deep but had cover.  He picked the bit up before the turn and put himself into the race.

“He wanted to stargaze and loaf when he got to the front but he has the makings of a really nice horse.”

Craigellachie started at $26 and long-time stable clients Peter and Brenda Breen were surprised by the price following his impressive last-start victory at Caloundra.

The Breens have known Kelly Doughty and her husband Gary for more than 20 years.  Their association has now delivered 58 wins since the days when they lived in Victoria.

Gary rode his first winner for the Breens aboard Century Rising at Kyneton in 1991.  He was a top Victorian jockey winning Group 1 races on Abaridy (Caulfield Guineas) and Showmeran (Toorak Handicap) before moving to Queensland in the 1990s.

He won a Prime Minister’s Cup (Starmaker), Ipswich Cup (Fine Spy) and Goldmarket (Atlantic Crossing) prior to retiring from the saddle to help Kelly train their team on the Gold Coast.

Craigellachie is by prolific Racetree winner-getter Monashee Mountain and his dam Jaina Solo is a winning half-sister to G3 Gold Coast Guineas winner Chakvetadze (Taimazov).

The Breens bred Craigellachie and they also have his 2yo half-sister Perfect Cube (Octagonal) plus a yearling filly by Refuse To Bend and a Spinning World filly foaled on October 30.
