Compass heading in the right direction for Makybe

Compass is heading in the right direction after a character-building victory at Newcastle.  The Makybe homebred won the Robinson Property Maiden Hcp (1300m) on Saturday.

Compass (3g Redoute’s Choice – Valkyrie Diva by Jade Robbery) was sooled to the front by Jason Lee and settled down for a fight in the straight when tackled by The Shooter.

Arrowfield champion Redoute’s Choice sired him from a stakes winning half-sister to Makybe Diva.  “He just keeps getting better with time as the family suggests,” trainer Gai Waterhouse said.  “He was strong in a trial win at Rosehill last week and the distance was ideal first up.”

Waterhouse bought him for $600,000 at the 2010 Inglis Easter yearling sale and Makybe owners Tony and Deslee Santic retained a share with Sportingbet manager Michael Sullivan.

Valkyrie Diva was a more than capable mare in her own right winning 8 races topped by a G3 Tesio Stakes victory at Moonee Valley.  Compass is her first foal and her second, also by Redoute’s Choice, is a Lloyd Williams owned colt named Wales.

Compass is one of 41 individual three year-old winners for Redoute’s Choice in Australia and NZ this season.  That number will continue to grow in the coming weeks with newcomers like Miss Majella and Future Shock.

Miss Majella (ex Synaesthesia by Quiet American) won a recent Rosehill trial for Gerald Ryan while Future Shock (ex Surprize Surprize by Prized) scored in a strong hit-out at Kensington for Bart Cummings.

Top of the dial among the Redoute’s Choice three year-olds this season is Darley colt Galah.  He was a Group 3 winner at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week and he has been nominated to resume in the G2 Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill this Saturday.
