Kia-Ora Stud tops Day 1 at Melbourne Premier

A rainy start to the Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale failed to dampen the demand for quality yearlings at Oaklands Junction of Monday.

Over $10 million changed hands for 179 yearlings at an average of $73,392.  The clearance rate reached 78% and the median rose 30% to $65,000 in a clear indication of the increased depth of pedigree and type catalogued this year.

Kia-Ora Stud sold South African Horse of the Year Igugu at the Melbourne Premier three years ago and the Scone based operation had the did the honours again when a Fastnet Rock – Scenario filly sold to Gary Mudgway and John McArdle for $300,000.

Mudgway was involved in the purchase of G1 winning Fastnet Rock filly Mosheen at the 2010 Inglis Easter Sale and the Day 1 leader reminded him of last year’s VRC Oaks winner.

The top priced colt was a Fastnet Rock – Litowinda colt purchased by Anthony Cummings from Millford Thoroughbreds for $250,000.

Premier trainer Peter Moody, who purchased Black Caviar for $210,000 at the 2008 Premier, led the Day 1 buyers list with 5 lots for a total of $500,000.  Fellow trainers Anthony Cummings, David Hayes, Jason Warren and Robbie Griffiths also purchased three or more yearlings on Monday.

Hong Kong, New Zealand and Singapore buyers were also active as were numerous individuals from South Africa including Mike de Kock who purchased an Encosta de Lago colt from Tyreel Stud for leading South African owner Marcus Jooste.

The sale continues through to Thursday and the online catalogue is available at www.inglis.com.au
