Black Caviar dispelled any doubts about her ability to run out a strong 1400 metres in the G1 C.F. Orr Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
In front of a huge crowd, the champion mare won with consummate ease. She settled perfectly in the running line and then put the race to bed with an amazing 10.64s sectional between the 400m and 200m.
Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) had more than three lengths to spare over Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed and WA Group 1 winner Playing God. Luke Nolan gave her the run of the race and it was all over a long way from home.
The superstar mare’s unbeaten record now stands at 18 and 8 of them have been at Group 1 level. Connections have now collected $4.74 million in prizemoney, a great return on the $210,000 she cost from the Swettenham Stud consignment at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
Part-owner Gary Wilkie was once again blown away by his amazing mare. “I am very proud of her and it’s a very humbling experience to be part of Black Caviar”, Wilkie said. “I was worried today, there were some very good horses out there, but she just put paid to them very quickly, I’m just in awe of what she does, it’s just extraordinary.”
Trainer Peter Moody is now thinking of backing Black Caviar up in the G1 VRC Lightning Stakes over 1000m at Flemington next Saturday. “What can you say, it’s just unbelievable,’ said Moody. “I know people doubt the opposition, but they’re good horses, there’s a Caulfield Cup winner who look outstanding three weeks ago and what she does to good horses is beyond belief.”
The next chance to find another champion with Inglis is at the Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands where 790 yearlings will go under the hammer from Monday February 27 to March 1.
