Talented filly Wordplay opened her account with a strong finish to win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.
An eye-catching second when making her debut at the same venue two weeks ago, the Anthony Cummings trained filly was sent out favourite for TAB Iphone App Plate (1400m) and, even though the winning margin was only a nose, the victory was impressive.
Wordplay (3f Fastnet Rock – Cryptic Miss by Snippets) settled back in the field from a wide gate and and had to pull out a long finishing burst to win from Define who railed up late to make it interesting.
“She’s very much a stayer and to sustain a long wide run as she did was a great effort,” Cummings said. “She’s a half-sister to Fiveandahalfstar who won the Derby for us and she will be going to the VRC Oaks to try and make it a family double.”
Coolmore Stud champion Fastnet Rock is no stranger to success in the VRC Oaks having sired Mosheen to win the classic by 9 lengths in 2011. The Cummings filly is the second winner from two to race for Cryptic Miss who hails from the family of Sydney Cup winner Crossed Swords.
Her star performer Fiveandahalfstar added the G1 BMW Stakes to his record in the autum but he has been sidelined for the spring through injury.
Cryptic Miss has a two year-old filly by High Chaparral and will foal again this spring to Fastnet Rock.
