Darby Dan loses link with golden era in America

The excitement surrounding the birth of All American’s first foal at Darby Dan Farm has been tempered by news that Repriced had succumbed to a heart attack.

Aged 24, Repricede was one of only four sons of Roberto still standing in the USA.  “It’s the real end of an era,” Darby Dan owner John Phillips said,  “He represented a connection to the golden era of the American stallion.”

Repriced won five races including the 1991 Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar before retiring to Mare Haven Farm in Lexington.  He moved to Darby Dan in 2000 and, to date, has sired 168 winners including North American Group winners Rich in Spirit, Closeout, Spruce Run, No Inflation and Capital Request.  His international roll-call includes champions in Italy (Miles Gloriosus) and Colombia (Rotativa).

His sire Roberto was a Darby Dan homebred who went on to become a sire of influence especially in turf ranks.  His remaining sons standing in the USA are Dynaformer, Lindsey’s Roberto and Wistful Roberto.

“My grandfather John Galbreath named Roberto after the great Pittsburgh Pirates right fielder Roberto Clemente,” Phillips said.  “Both Robertos were exceptional in their fields and Repriced was a wonderful link to those great years.”

All American (Red Ransom) shuttles from Arrowfield to Darby Dan and he is the only Group winning juvenile from the Roberto sireline still active in Kentucky.  His first USA foal was born on Monday from the Kingmambo mare Royal Wonder.
