First Makfi foals in France and Ireland

Westbury Stud shuttler Makfi has his first foals on the ground in Europe.

Makfi won the 2010 English 2000 Guineas and inflicted a rare defeat on Goldikova in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois.  His Timeform rating of 132 was higher than that of his own sire Dubawi (Dubai Millenium) who has made a sensational start to his stud career in Europe.

Makfi retired to Tweenhills Stud last year and stood for 25,000 pounds which was the most expensive of any freshman sire in England.  He was supported by The Aga Khan, Darley, Cheveley Park Stud, Juddmonte along with numerous breeders from France where he began racing.

Prepared by Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mikel Delzangles, he had scored on debut at Fontainebleau and added a G3 at Maisons-Laffitte before causing an upset in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.

His first foal to arrive was a colt out of Raisonable at Haras des Monceaux in Normandy.  The dam is a half-sister to G1 performer Legerete.  A Makfi – Kassiopeia colt was also born last week at Kildangan Stud in County Kildare.

Tweenhills Stud is gearing up for another full book for Makfi in 2012.  Top of the list is Juddmonte’s G1 winning Danehill filly Banks Hill.

Makfi arrived back at Tweenhills after a busy season at Gerry Harvey’s Westbury Stud in NZ.  His initial southern book included G1 winners Insouciant (Keeper), Giovanna (Blues Traveller) and Tapildo (Rhythm) plus G2 winners Everswindell (Align), Keep The Passion (Keeper) and Illuminates (Strategic).

Meanwhile, Harvey is biding his time before deciding whether Librettist will return to NZ in 2012.  The Darley stallion had been based at Dalham Hall Stud and Haras du Logis before making a further move to Italy this year.

Librettist (Danzig) began shuttling to Darley Kelvinside in 2008 before transferring to Westbury.  “I will just wait and see how his first Australian bred two year-olds perform before making any plans,” Harvey said during the Gold Coast Magic Millions.  “But they’re off to a good start with a couple of early winners this season.”

Librettist opened his account with Carried Away at Queanbeyan in December and Classical Melody won at Orange before finishing fourth to Cavalry Rose in the Inglis 2yo Classic at Rosehill.

The first NZ bred yearlings by Librettist were available at the NZB Karaka Select Sale this week.
