Darley has pensioned its Kentucky-based champion sire Cherokee Run due to declining fertility and physical ailments.
Rising 20, Cherokee Run was Champion US Sprinter in 1994 and retired to Jonabell Farm in 1996. He was part of the deal when Darley subsequently acquired Jonabell and, to date, he has sired 44 stakes winners.
Cherokee Run was the leading freshman sire of 1999. His first crop included flying filly Chilukki who won six of her seven starts at two. Champion colt War Pass, who is based at Lane’s End Farm, was another of his Group 1 performers and other Cherokee Run horses at stud include During, Kafwain, Sir Cherokee, Yonaguska, and Zanjero.
Cherokee Run (Runaway Groom – Cherokee Dame by Silver Saber) covered 45 mares this year and was one of the few remaining sons of Runaway Groom at stud. He was bred by George Ornett in Florida out of the Silver Saber mare Cherokee Dame. His 12 wins included the 1994 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1).
