Darley rolls dice with Backgammon

Darley sire Domesday filled the quinella in the Myer Spring Fashion Stakes at Flemington when Backgammon defeated Domesky by a long-head on the VRC Oaks Day support card.

Backgammon relished the step up to 1800m to become the third individual stakes winner for his sire.  The Peter Snowden trained gelding was the first ever winner for Domesday when he scored at Flemington on December 19 last year.

“He’s really a Derby-type horse but a leg injury shortened his preparation for the spring,” Snowden said.  “He’s a bit dour and really wants 2000m to 2400m.  We will target the Sydney Guineas and the AJC Derby in the autumn or wait for the Queensland Derby.”

Backgammon (3g Domesday-Varied by Grand Lodge) is from a half-sister to G3 C S Hayes Stakes winner Youth (Quest For Fame).  His dam has a 2YO filly named Hourglass (Strategic) and a yearling filly by Any Given Saturday.

Domesday (Red Ransom) was a high class two-year old who defeated subsequent G1 winner Testafiable on debut at Caulfield.  He then scored a dominant win in the G2 Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill claiming the scalps of subsequent stakes-winning juveniles Flying Pegasus, Dr Green and Jet Spur.

That victory ensured him a start in the G1 Golden Slipper Stakes where he finished three lengths fifth after being slow to begin and meeting with trouble in running.

Domesday is a son of Vinery champion Red Ransom and he hails from one of the most influential stallion making families in the Stud Book.  His dam In The Past hails from the same family as champion sire Redoute’s Choice as well as Umatilla and Hurricane Sky, Al Maher and Spinning World.

Domesday is also the sire of last season’s G1 T J Smith Stakes winner Pressday and G3 MRC Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Divorces.   He’s standing his first season at Darley’s Northwood Park after moving from Twin Hills in NSW.
