Darley shuttler Any Given Saturday topped the yearlings offered during the opening session of the Keeneland January Sale in Kentucky on Monday.  He was purchased by Walnut Hill Stables for US$150,000.

The session-topper is from Deputy Minister mare Pout who is a daughter of Keeneland stakes winner Bedroom Blues.

Any Given Saturday (Distorted Humor) shuttles to Darley’s Seymour base at Northwood Park.  He was a G1 winner of the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park and stands for a $13,750 fee in Victoria.

Miss Catalyst (Mr. Greeley) was the most popular lot among the broodmares on Day 1 at Keeneland.  She made $325,000.

Miss Catalyst (Mr. Greeley) was last seen capturing the Pebbles Stakes (LR) at Belmont Park in October.  Twin Creeks Farm bought the filly who is currently recovering from a leg injury.  She will resume training next month with Todd Pletcher.

Miss Catalyst is the first foal from the stakes-winning Key to the Cat (Tale of the Cat).  The dam is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner For Pete’s Sake (Clever Trick).

Keeneland reported that 178 horses sold for $6.59 million during Day 1 of the January Sale.  The average dropped 37.4% to $37,037.

“As expected, the market is undergoing a reset and adjusting to the new market reality,” Keeneland Director Geoffrey Russell said.  “The most important indicator for this sale in my judgment is that horses are moving and that there is a market for sales.”

Spherical (Storm Cat) was next broodmare on the leader board selling for $300,000.  She is carrying a Distorted Humor foal and was purchased by Norman D. Owens Bloodstock as agent.  She is a full sister to the dam of Hollywood Prevue (G3) winner and highly-regarded classic prospect American Lion (Tiznow).

“The main reason I bought this mare is because she is in foal to Distorted Humor,” Owens said.  “He’s one of the best values around right now in my opinion.  He’s got a lot of good two-year-olds coming, and he’s just a good sire.  This mare is quality and anytime you can find a mare like this – by Storm Cat out of a G1 winner – at this price, you need to buy her.”

Glasgow’s Gold (Seeking the Gold) also made $300K.  She is dam of 2009 Ruffian Hcp (G1) winner Swift Temper (Giant’s Causeway) and was snapped up by Byer Patch Farm.   The 14-year-old mare was sold in foal to Indian Charlie.
