Day 2 Cape Premier Sale – New Dynasty in South Africa

Brisk trading continued on Day 2 of the Cape Premier yearling sale highlighted by a Dynasty – Dancer’s Daughter colt that made R2 million.

The flashy grey son of two South African champions was consigned by Highlands Farm and was purchased by local bloodstock agent John Freeman.   “The colt resembles Dancer’s Daughter more than his sire Dynasty,” Freeman said after Friday evening’s second and final session.  “I liked the idea of buying the progeny of two Durban July winners.  How often has that occurred?”

Dynasty (Fort Wood) stands at Highlands Farm and the colt’s dam Dancer’s Daughter is regarded as one of the best fillies to have competed locally in recent times.  She dead-heated with the legendary Pocket Power in the 2008 July Handicap.

Leading sire by aggregate was the Drakenstein Stud-based Trippi (End Sweep) with 24 yearlings selling for R15.13 million.  Top sire by average was the late, great Jet Master.  South Africa’s greatest homebred sire sold 7 lots for an average price of R839,280.

An increasing demand for high-quality yearlings saw the sale’s average rise 20% to R484,408.  It continues to be popular with buyers and vendors alike especially after producing Group 1 winners Soft Falling Rain, War Horse and The Hangman.

Cape Thoroughbred CEO Robin Bruss was delighted with the results.  “This sale has really matured since its inception in 2011.  The initial teething problems have been resolved, and this year saw the sale being run by a well co-ordinated team.

“It was decided to reduce the catalogue to 240 horses this year, and this has clearly worked very well.  The average is well up on last year’s sale, and even the gross total is not far off last year’s total, despite 100 fewer lots.”
