Dead stallion still pulling Tricks

Foals by former Collingrove Stud shuttler Favorite Trick are still being born even though he’s been dead for more than five years.

A USA Horse of the Year in 1997, he shuttled from Walmac Farm to Australia for three seasons from 2000 to 2002.

Favorite Trick (Phone Trick) didn’t make the grade at stud in Kentucky and was eventually moved to JEH Stallion Station in New Mexico where he covered thoroughbreds and quarter horses.

Quarter horse rules allow breeders to use artificial insemination.  Favorite Trick died in a stable fire in June 2006 but JEH still offers his services with stored semen at a $3,000 fee.

Favorite Trick has sired 38 quarter horses winners including Good Reason SA who won the $750,000 Champion of Champions earlier this month in Los Angeles.

Favorite Trick sired 76 individual winners at a 66% strike rate in Australia & NZ including the Listed winners French Favorite (Perth), Oahu (Oakbank) and Rutherford Eagle (Gosford).

Hoofnote

Former leading bookmaker Bruce McHugh is currently involved in a lawsuit with Australian Jockey Club Ltd against the prohibition of artificial insemination in thoroughbreds.  Federal Court Justice Alan Robertson reserved his decision at the end of the trial on Monday, December 19.
