Over Quota won Heat 1 of the MRC Swettenham Summer Championship (1600m) at Sandown on Wednesday and trainer Mark Webb is eager to back him up for another leg of the series in January.
Over Quota (6g Testa Rossa – Jazz Baby by Zabeel) came from midfield to blouse out Maquina (Archway) and Wookah (Encosta De Lago) in a blanket finish at Betfair Park.
“I will keep an eye on the calendar for the rest of the Swettenham Championship,” Webb said. “Racing in summer suits Over Quota because he’s a duffer in wet conditions.”
Webb began training Over Quota 12 months ago after he was initially based at Bairnsdale with Julie Scott. “It’s the first time I’ve had him right,” Webb added. “I put him out for the winter and he was knocking on the door after a couple of good runs at Geelong and Ballarat last month.”
Over Quota is raced by Gippsland based owners Arno Blank and Judy Bourke who bought him for $28,000 at the 2007 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.
Wednesday’s Sandown victory boosted his bankroll to better than $90,000 from 5 wins in 37 starts. Over Quota is by Vinery sire Testa Rossa and he is one of six winners foaled by NZ bred Jazz Baby. The mare has a yearling filly by God’s Own.
Over Quota earned 10 points in Heat 1 of the MRC Swettenham Summer Championship. Heat 2 is scheduled for this Saturday, December 24 at Sandown Hillside.
The Championship comprises 10 Heats and a $100,000 Final at Betfair Park on January 28. The prize package also includes a trophy and a free service to Swettenham Stud’s exciting shuttle sire Equiano which is valued at $16,500.
