Darley homebred Altar turned the clock back 10 years when she annexed the G2 Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill of Saturday. She is the latest winner from 2001 Magic Night winner Hosannah.
Altar (2f Commands – Hosannah by Octagonal) ran a tremendous race on debut when narrowly beaten by Triple Asset in the G3 TBV Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Flemington on Super Saturday.
Transferred to Sydney by trainer Peter Snowden, she controlled the Magic Night sitting outside stablemate Disputes. After surging to the front, she held off Patinack Farm filly Pane In The Glass (Testa Rossa) by a length.
Altar’s dam Hosannah finished fourth to Ha Ha in the 2001 Golden Slipper Stakes a week after winning the Magic Night.
Darley colt Sepoy heads Golden Slipper markets and Snowden wouldn’t speculate on whether Altar will join him in the big race next Saturday. “She is a good filly and we will sit down and decide early this week,” he said. “It’s a $3.5 million race so we won’t make the decision lightly.”
Altar is by Darley resident Commands. His only 2YO Group 1 winner to date is last year’s AJC Champagne Stakes winner Skilled.
