Delago Brom gelding Lago Bay scored a record-breaking victory in Singapore last night when he clocked 59 seconds to win over 1000m at Kranji.
Lago Bay (3g Delago Brom – Shirley’s Luvena by El Moxie) shaved 0.2 seconds off the previous mark while sprinting to a two length victory for owners Bernard Lee and Paul Crawford.
Trainer Don Baertschiger said Lago Bay was a pure speed horse. “I suppose it does limit his options a bit but 1000 metres is his go,” he said. “They’ll have to go 58 something to beat him in the future.”
Baertschiger instructed jockey John Powell to make full use of Lago Bay’s speed and good draw. “There is no use in taking a sit in 1000m races,” he claimed. “Luckily he jumped well and Johnny was able to get across and lead. I was pretty confident on the home-turn as he was really trucking.”
Lago Bay was the second winner in as many weeks for Delago Brom in Singapore. He has another promising type with Michael Freedman named Day of Empire who on debut at Kranji on July 12.
Day of Empire (3g Delago Brom – Bithlo by Kenmare) should get over more ground than Lago Bay. “He should be able to see out a mile and he looks to be a horse for the future,” Freedman predicted.
Delago Brom is by Champion Australian sire Encosta de Lago from G2 VRC Edward Manifold Stakes winner Brompton Cross (El Qahira). He is based at Eliza Park after a career that included a G1 victory in the VRC Australian Guineas at Flemington when he beat Thorn Park, Natural Blitz and Titanic Jack.
His first crop was headed by G2 Caulfield Autumn Classic winner Brom Brom and his latest batch of two year-olds includes LR Black Opal Stakes winner Delago Bolt.
The Gary Portelli trained Delago Bolt looks set for a lucrative spring campaign after winning a Randwick trial on Monday in the second fastest heat of the morning. His owners refused a huge Hong Kong offer for the gelding last month.
Portelli has several options with Delago Bolt on the way to the G1 Caulfield Guineas in October. He will kick off in either the G3 Missile Stakes on August 1 or the G3 San Domenico on August 8 before heading to the G3 Up and Coming Stakes on August 22 or the G1 Golden Rose on August 29.
Delago Brom will stand for an $8,250 fee at Eliza Park this year.
