Tasmanian based stallions were prominent at Kilmore on Tuesday with a winning treble on the 10 race card. Poacher’s Gold (West Quest) won Race 7 and she was followed by Side Splitter (Savoire Vivre) and Green Rises (Festival Hall)
POACHER’S GOLD is part of a six-horse team that trainer Scott Brunton brought to the mainland earlier this month. She won her maiden at Devonport last September and led all the way to score by a long head at Kilmore.
Poacher’s Gold (3f West Quest – Poacher’s Relay by Poacher’s Moon) is by champion Tassie sire West Quest (Gone West) who stands at Graeme McCulloch’s Grenville Stud in Whitemore. She was a $20,000 buy for owners Craig and Angela Brakey at the 2007 Tasmanian Magic Millions Sale.
Poacher’s Gold is a half-sister to the winners Camden, Scottish Lass, Sid’s Flyer and Devon Relay who were all by Biscay sire Devon Flyer. She is also a full sister to 2007 Camperdown Cup winner Poacher’s Quest.
Brunton will be at Moonee Valley this Saturday saddling up last start Launceston winner Neil’s Gold (Niello) for the Brakeys and Libertine Lil (Redding) for a partnership that includes his trainer-father Dave Brunton.
SIDE SPLITTER made it a running double for the Tassie-breds at Kilmore when he shot clear in the straight and then refused to surrender in the final furlong.
Side Splitter (4g Savoire Vivre – Szubanski by Rory’s Jester) is a younger brother to Luvizpet who won at Ballarat the previous Thursday, July 16.
Cranbourne trainers Bruce and Jean Purcell have found a live one with Side Splitter. The gelding was consistent without breaking the ice last year but he has won four of his last five since Easter. The Purcells also race Luvizpet and their dam Szubanski who won on debut at Cranbourne in November 1998.
Side Splitter and Luvizpet are by Armidale Stud resident Savoire Vivre. A son of Sadler’s Wells, he is the also sire of consistent mare With Decorum who has been runner-up at Sandown twice in July.
With Decorum is overdue to open her account in Melbourne for owners Ken and Jenny Breese, Jim Osborne and Armidale Stud’s Robyn Whishaw. She has already won 9 races and $140,000 in prizemoney.
GREEN RISES completed the Tassie hat-trick with a determined win for fellow Cranbourne conditioner Quinton Scott in Race 10.
Green Rises (4g Festival Hall – Aristocrat Lady by Never Quit) was bred by Nancy Stubbs shortly before her husband, Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame inductee Allan Stubbs, lost a long battle with cancer.
Festival Hall is by Sadler’s Wells and, after stints in Victoria and WA, he is now based at Larry Dalco’s Fairlands Thoroughbreds near Launceston.
His dam Aristocrat Lady won five for Allan Stubbs including a race at Caulfield in June 2000. She has a rising two year-old filly by Grenville Stud sire Partners Choice.
