Day 2 of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale burst into life with two millionaire broodmares changing hands at Newmarket on Tuesday.  The session saw a total of 163 lots sell for 19.26 million guineas and the average increased 23% to 118,181 guineas.

Green Desert mare Diary topped the bill at 1.30 million guineas.  Australian breeder Paul Makin appeared to have won a bidding war when he weighed in with a million guineas but he was trumped by Tweenhills Stud’s David Redvers who was acting for Sheikh Fahad from Qatar.

“We would like to send her to Dubawi and try and replicate the mating that produced Makfi,” Redvers said.  “Sheikh Fahad is thrilled to be buying the very best of bloodstock and this mare really has got it all.”

Diary is the dam of the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye winner Total Gallery and G1 Fillies’ Mile runner-up Lady Darshaan.  She was offered in foal to Galileo.

Later in the day, Diary’s daughter Lady Darshaan (High Chaparral) was knocked down to agent John Warren for 600,000 guineas after he saw off Blandford Bloodstock’s Tom Goff and NZ agent Guy Mulcaster.

The second mare to top the million for the day was the Highest Honor matron First.  She is the dam of the Listed winning pair Law Lord and Perfect Stride and was a highlight of the Bloomsbury Stud dispersal.  

Paul Makin was once again prominent but he couldn’t match the 1.10 million guineas offered by agent Charlie Gordon-Watson.  All up, Bloomsbury Stud’s 13 mares realised 2.98 million guineas.

Group 3 winning filly Grace O’Malley was offered in foal to Shamardal and she made 850,000 guineas.  Agent Tony Nerses, who bought her on behalf of Kuwaiti based businessmen Salah Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar, indicated she would visit Oasis Dream next year.

Last year’s French 1000 Guineas winner Elusive Wave (Elusive City) was next on the leader board when she sold to Coolmore Stud’s MV Magnier for 800,000 guineas.
