Laminitis claims leading sire Mr. Greeley

Leading Kentucky sire Mr. Greeley has been put down at Gainesway Farm because of worsening laminitis.  The son of Gone West was 18.

“All of us at Gainesway are saddened at the lost of a great stallion,” Gainesway president Antony Beck said.  “He was not only a great stallion, but a great horse.”

Mr. Greeley shuttled to Independent Stallions in 1996 and sired G1 VATC Oakleigh Plate winner Miss Kournikova from a small book of 26 mares.  The disappointing response from Australian broodmare owners meant he didn’t return Down Under.

Independent Stallions studmaster Mike Becker also shuttled Distorted Humor (Forty Niner) to his Victorian property a few years later and he was also shunned by local breeders.

Both stallions represented the Mr Prospector line and went on to carve out successful stud careers in North America.  Mr. Greeley sired G1 winners the calibre of El Corredor and Whywhywhy in North America and Finsceal Beo who completed the English & Irish 1000 Guineas double in 2007.

Mr. Greeley was a G3 winner of the Lafayette, Swale, and Spectacular Bid Stakes.  He was also runner-up in the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Sprint.  He has sired over 600 individual winners and 53 of them have been black-type winners.  His progeny earnings have surpassed $50 million.

Mr. Greeley covered 128 mares in 2010 and 86% are reported in foal.  He will be buried at Gainesway.
