Trainer Aidan O’Brien has admitted he’s conerned as to whether So You Think will handle the dirt surface in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Churchill Downs on Saturday week.
“So You Think has those attributes we feel that you need, but we don’t know about the dirt as he hasn’t run on it before,” O’Brien said. “We think he’s a great traveller through his races and is tactically sharp. He is a very mature, seasoned horse and his high cruising speed makes him unique.
“He has an amazing constitution and capacity for work and he had a couple of months off in the summer with an autumn campaign in mind. Very few horses can be backed up in big races like this and he didn’t lose a kilo at Ascot last time.
“That shows how strong and competitive he is and he’s naturally very quick from the gates like Giant’s Causeway. Ryan (Moore) will decide where he is in the race, but usually he has pace to get a nice position.”
O’Brien saddled Giant’s Causeway and Henrythenavigator to finish second in the BC Classic.
Stablemate Await The Dawn (Giant’s Causeway) was set to run in the Classic as well but has been switched to the Breeders’ Cup Turf.
So You Think (High Chaparral) won his first two outings of the year in Ireland before a narrow loss at the hands of Darley galloper Rewilding in the G1 Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot.
He rebounded to win the G1 Coral Eclipse and G1 Irish Champion Stakes but was set a tough task in the Arc de Triomphe and was never going to run down German filly Danedream.
The NZ bred champion is coming off a last-start second to Cirrus Des Aigles in the G1 Champion Stakes at Ascot.
Uncle Mo heads the market at 3/1 for the November 5 championship at Churchill Downs ahead of So You Think (5/1) and Havre De Grace (6/1).
A Breeders’ Cup victory will vindicate the decision to send So You Think overseas this year. But coming up empty will only fuel claims he should have stayed home and equalled Kingston Town’s record of three Cox Plates.
