Discussion Paper released on Queensland Oaks

Racing Queensland (RQL) and Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) released a joint discussion paper on Friday to assist in a review of the conditions for the Queensland Oaks

RQL and BRC have discussed the benefit of extending the age conditions of the Queensland Oaks to enable mares to compete and both organisations are keen to seek external views in relation to this issue.

RQL and BRC will assess the views of key industry groups and stakeholders and stressed there should be no presumption the issue is a fait accompli.

RQL Director of Product Development Paul Brennan said he appreciates the issue has the potential to invoke some meaningful discussion and does not expect that all sections of the industry will support the concept.

There are some key issues that RQL and BRC are grappling with in assessing the benefits of this proposal. They are seeking feedback from all relevant groups after considering the issues outlined below;

* With five Group 1 three year old fillies races of 2000 metres and above, is it appropriate that the longest Group 1 race eligible to mares is only 1600 metres?

* Is the Queensland Oaks suitably positioned to provide an opportunity for mares to acquire Group 1 status in a race of 2000 metres and above, and would this be an enhancement to the Australian Pattern?

* If it is considered that the Qld Oaks should remain in its current three year old – 2400m format, how can its rating be improved?

“The Queensland racing industry has a track record of delivering a completely structured platform of feature races that provide maximum opportunity and enable natural progression,” Brennan said. “We understand this option is a step away from the traditional Oaks. But it is important that all avenues are investigated so as to provide opportunity for all types of horses to acquire black type.”

The full discussion paper is available on both the RQL and BRC websites and interested parties are requested to provide feedback by close of business on Monday, June 13.
