Stewards awarded Driefontein the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in a controversial finish to the $2 million event at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
No Looking Back (Redoute’s Choice) railed up to defeat stablemate Driefontein (Fastnet Rock) by a neck but was demoted when officials ruled he had caused sufficient interference to reverse the decision.
It was the second divisive big-race decision in as many months following Luckygray’s Group 1 victory in the Railway Stakes at Ascot in December.
The Magic Millions Classic was a win-win result for Gai Waterhouse who indicated there will be a return clash between the two well-bred colts in the G1 Golden Slipper.
Driefontein is yet another successful syndication for Star Thoroughbreds following the likes of Theseo, Danni Martine and Sebring.
Star manager Denise Martin purchased Driefontein for $75,000 at the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions. He is by Coolmore champion Fastnet Rock and is one of five winners from five to race for Listed VRC Creswick Stakes winner Follow Gold.
Follow Gold had already foaled winners by Distorted Humor, Spectrum, Testa Rossa and Tale of the Cat before the MM Classic winner. She has since missed to Danehill Dancer and Duke Of Marmalade and was covered by Redoute’s Choice sire Tickets last year.
Driefontein is one of 24 stakes winners for Fastnet Rock who is about to cover his third northern book at Coolmore Ireland this year.
