Prominent Kentucky sire Dixieland Band was put down at Lane’s End Farm this week due to the infirmities of old age. He was 30.
Dixieland Band (Northern Dancer – Mississippi Mud by Delta Judge) sired of 117 stakes winners with progeny earnings in excess of $75 million. He was one of the original three stallions to enter stud at Lane’s End.
Dixieland Band was a G2 winner of the 1983 Pennsylvania Derby and 1984 Massachusetts Hcp. Boasting four crosses of Hyperion within six generations, he went on to become a sire of global importance.
He sired Group 1 winners Drum Taps who landed the prestigious Ascot Gold Cup twice; Dixie Union, a top young sire who also stands at Lane’s End; Egyptband who won a French Oaks and was runner-up in an Arc de Triomphe, Dixie Brass (Metropolitan Hcp), Canadian champion Cotton Carnival and millionaire handicappers Del Mar Dennis and Bowman’s Band.
Dixieland Band also made a tremendous impact as a broodmare sire with 134 stakes winners and $131 million in earnings. His daughters have produced Kentucky Derby winners Monarchos (2001) and Street Sense (2007) plus Japan’s Melbourne Cup winner Delta Blues.
Dixieland Band will be buried in the Lane’s End cemetery.
