Zenyatta increased her unbeaten run to 16 in a row with a four length victory in the G1 Apple Blossom Stakes (G1) at Oaklawn Park on Friday.
The six-year-old Street Cry mare matched the winning streaks of legends Citation and Cigar as she took over on the turn under jockey Mike Smith and coasted to a comfortable victory in the $500,000 event.
“She’s amazing; she’s from another planet,” part-owner Ann Moss said. “For her to bring so much joy to so many people is wonderful.”
Zenyatta faced a small field of only four challengers in the 1800m race and she did not disappoint the thousands of fans who made the trip to see her in person. As expected, Smith reserved Zenyatta at the back of the pack about eight lengths behind the leaders Be Fair and Taptam.
Zenyatta made a sweeping move approaching the corner and she took command in the home straight. “It was just a great trip,” said Smith, who has ridden Zenyatta in 13 of her 16 starts. “She took off on me. I didn’t need to do anything.”
Zenyatta boosted her career earnings to $5.92 million in her fourth season of racing.
