Dominant Gene will be winning better races than a Moe maiden on the strength of his debut victory on Monday.
The grey son of Dash For Cash blew like a gale from $9.50 to $17 but belied those odds at the business end of the Crackerjack Plate (1017m). He overhauled the short-priced favourite Not Approved to score by more than a length for local trainers Paul and Tracey Templeton.
“It’s great to get a winner for Paul and Tracey – we go way back to when Paul was riding,” jockey Craig Robertson said. “They gave him plenty of time to mature and he feels like a nice horse.
“I thought he would jump with the leaders but he took a step back when they bounced. We got cover in the field before I decided to put him into the race. He really picked up and was strong through the line.”
Dominant Gene (4g Dash For Cash – Filouka by Guiscard) is a younger half-brother to Firenado (Artie Schiller) who won a Pakenham maiden for the Templetons last season. Their dam foaled a filly by Written Tycoon last year.
Dash For Cash is renowned for the ability to sire tough stock that train on and he has sustained a remarkable 65% strike-rate at stud. Dominant Gene is his 357th individual winner from 544 starters.
