Grand Final weekend for Bluegrass

Bluegrass Bloodstock (FBAA) agent Lenny Russo is keyed up for a Group 1 weekend after a winning double at Morphettville on Saturday.

He teamed up with Peter Gelagotis to win with Kiwi expats The Willybe and Moss ‘N Dale at Morphettville.  “It was a fantastic result and a great training performance from Pete,” Russo said.  “You work hard for days like that in Adelaide.”

The Willybe (Alamosa) was purchased privately earlier this year and has filled out the quinella in 6 of his 8 starts since arriving in Australia.  Moss ‘N’ Dale (Castledale) was bought unraced out of a paddock in New Zealand and has won 8 of 18 starts for over $240,000.

Bluegrass Bloodstock begins the grand-final weekend with Malaguerra in the G1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night.  Russo bought him for $32,000 and the Magnus gelding has parlayed that into $1.60 million.

“He spelled tremendous and has a great record first-up,” Russo reported on Monday.  “After the Moir, he will go to the Manikato, Darley Classic and Winterbottom in Perth.”

Trainer Anthony Freedman has elevated Mr Sneaky to Group 1 company for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Sunday.  A son of High Chaparral, he cost $120,000 as a yearling and is coming off an encouraging second in the LR Tontonan Stakes at Flemington.

“He was my top pick at the 2015 Melbourne Premier,” Russo recalled.  “He’s down in the order of entry but is a live chance if he gets a start.”
