Driefontein delivers for Star Thoroughbreds

Driefontein has shot to the top of markets for the $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic after an impressive victory in the G3 Bruce McLachlan Stakes at Doomben.

Driefontein (2f Fastnet Rock – Follow Gold by Export Price) is the $3.80 equal favourite with Sizzling for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic on January 14.

The win was part of a winning quartet for Tommy Berry who shot to prominence in the 2011 Magic Millions Classic aboard flying filly Karuta Queen.

“She’s a different filly to Karuta Queen because she was a flying machine whereas this filly can relax,” Berry said.  “She wanted to stargaze a bit towards the line and could have won by further.”

The win was celebrated by Sydney based syndicator Denise Martin.  Her Star Thoroughbreds operation purchased the outstanding youngster for $75,000 at last January’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“I’ve had so much success buying from Magic Millions – all of my top Group 1 horses have been purchased from the Gold Coast,” Martin said.  “The sale is just so much fun each January – the atmosphere is fantastic and the horses are of great quality – I’m looking forward to the sale again in the New Year.”

Driefontein was bred by Bylong Park and sold through the Widden Stud draft for $75,000 at January’s Gold Coast Yearling Sale.  She is from Listed VRC Creswick Stakes winner Follow Gold and follows minor winners by Distorted Humor, Spectrum, Testa Rossa and Tale of the Cat.
