Well Armed, best known for his record-breaking victory in the 2009 Dubai World Cup, has been retired from racing.  The gelding had been on the comeback trail in California with trainer Eoin Harty but suffered a tendon injury during a work-out at Hollywood Park.

Well Armed (8g Tiznow – Well Dressed by Notebook) was bred and raced by WinStar Farm.  “He certainly occupies a special place in my heart,” WinStar’s Bill Casner said.  “He chipped a knee and fractured a hip as a three year-old but had the desire and will to overcome adversity.”

Well Armed was a feature winner of the G1 Goodwood Handicap, G2 San Antonio Handicap and G2 San Diego Handicap as a five year-old in 2008.  That year, he also ran third in the G1 Dubai World Cup and was runner-up in the G1 Pacific Classic.

He returned to the Gulf the following year and demolished the 2009 Dubai World Cup rivals by 14 lengths!  Runner-up Gloria de Campeao captured the race in 2010

Well Armed earned over $5.18 million in a 24 start career.  He will be retired to Casner’s ranch in Texas.
