Dubawi is closing in on a record-breaking year in Europe. He has emerged as a rising star on the Darley roster after an amazing year with his first crop in the northern hemisphere.
The total number of Dubawi juvenile winners climbed to 34 on Saturday night after Dutiful was successful in the C E Property Services Group Nursery (1400m) at Wolverhampton. It came just a day after Dubawi colt Makfi took the tally to 33 winners at Fontainebleau.
The record for a first-season sire in Europe is held by Invincible Spirit who sired 35 winners in 2006.
Dutiful looked anything but a two year-old winner after a woeful start in August. He was beaten a combined 50 lengths in his first four starts but then made a quantum leap forward when placed behind Lisahane Bog (Royal Applause) at Lingfield on November 14. The winner franked that form with a follow-up win at Kempton.
Dutiful (2c Dubawi – Pelagia by Lycius) was held up in the early stages by Keiran Fallon yesterday. He made headway on the inside and then collared the leader Knightfire before putting a length on the Invincible Spirit gelding.
Dutiful is trained by Mick Channon and he is a younger half-brother to Upper Hand (Mark of Esteem) who won twice and was runner-up in a G2 Richmond Stakes at Goodwood.
Their dam Pelagia is a half-sister to French G1 winners Lady of Chad (Prix Marcel Boussac) and Alcazar (Prix Royal-Oak) but she was unplaced in six starts as a three year-old. Second dam Sahara Breeze (Ela-Mana-Mou) is a half-sister to G1 Fillies Mile winner Ivanka and the dam of champion stayer Yeats (Sadler’s Wells).
Dutiful was catalogued for the 2007 Tattersalls Foal Sale but was passed-in by consigners New England Stud for 30,000 gns (AUD 56,795).
Dubawi stands under the Darley banner at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. His northern fee has been increased 33% to 20,000 pounds (AUD 35,650) for 2010.
