English St Leger Leader by Montjeu

Montjeu sired his third winner of the world’s oldest classic when Coolmore Stud colt Leading Light landed the G1 English St Leger (2900m) at Doncaster on Saturday.

Leading Light, who won the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot, was always prominent and stretched clear to win by over a length from English Oaks winner Talent.  “He is such a solid horse and there is plenty of class there,” trainer Aidan O’Brien said.  “We think a lot of him back home and he’s very versatile.  We could drop him back for the Arc de Triomphe but will have to discuss that.”

He joins Montjeu colts Masked Marvel and Scorpion on the St Leger honour-roll.  The 2013 winner is out of Dance Parade (Gone West) who was a precocious winner of the Queen Mary Stakes and Fred Darling Stakes.

Dance Parade has a yearling filly by Montjeu and a colt foal by Fastnet Rock.

Leading Light was purchased at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Demi O’Byrne for 520,000gns from Glenvale Stud.  O’Brien trains him for Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor.

Montjeu succumbed to septicemia aged 16 at Coolmore Stud last year.
