Equiano goes West in Gulf

Equiano colt Westhoughton has broken his maiden in the UAE with a two-length victory in the Mezied Hcp (1600m) for owner-trainer Ahmed bin Harmash.

Racing against older horses, he settled midfield before taking the lead at the furlong to defeat Sheikh Hamdan’s USA bred gelding Moosir (Daaher).

Westhoughton (3c Equiano – Khyber Knight by Night Shift) had been placed in England for trainer Karl Burke before relocating to the Gulf earlier this year.  He took time to acclimatize after finishing down the track in the UAE 2000 Guineas Trial at Meydan in January.

The victory coincided with Domanus who opened his sire’s Australian account in Newcastle on the weekend.

Equiano (Fr) shuttles to Swettenham Stud and his next yearlings will be available at the Inglis VOBIS Gold Sale next month.  They include colts from Canadian bred mare Play Mizzty For Me (Lot 172) and Plus Jamais (Lot 173).  The latter has a 2yo Equiano filly with Jason Warren named Orvassa.

Swettenham also sells an Equiano filly from Pure Drama who was a Sydney winner for Sheriff Iskander.  She is a half-sister to Brisbane Group 3 winner Tabulate and her filly has been catalogued as Lot 182 at Oaklands Junction.
