Exceed And Excel firing in United States

Darley sire Exceed And Excel is making a name for himself in the United States with exciting stakes winners Mrs Kipling and Flashmans Papers.  Both three year-olds were bred in Europe before transferring Stateside earlier this year.

Mrs Kipling (Ire) is now trained in California by Neil Drysdale and will attempt to win a Group 2 in the San Clemente Hcp this Saturday, August 1.

She started her career with Simon Callaghan in England and won a Lingfield maiden before landing the Listed Premio Divino Amore in Rome last September.  Put up for sale at Tattersalls in December, she was sold to US celebrity chef Bobby Flay for the equivalent of US$250,000.

Mrs Kipling (3f Exceed And Excel – Quinzey by Carnegie) just missed in her American debut in the G2 Providencia Stakes in April but went one better second-up with an emphatic victory in the G3 Senorita Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Flashmans Papers (GB) is best known for his 100/1 win in the LR Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot last year.  He is also based in California but is taking time to acclimatize to the United States.

Flashmans Papers (3c Exceed And Excel – Franglais by Lion Cavern) was unplaced in the G3 Cinema Handicap at Hollywood Park last month but trainer Doug O’Neill is hoping for an improved effort at Del Mar next month.

NIDEEB became the latest northern hemisphere stakes winner for Exceed And Excel when he prevailed in the Listed Winkfield Stakes at Ascot last Saturday.

Nideeb (2c Exceed And Excel – Mantesera by In The Wings) had won his maiden impressively at Yarmouth at his penultimate start and trainer Clive Brittain will now set him for the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes back at Ascot in September.

“He will continue to improve and I’m very pleased with him,” Brittain said.  “He’s a tough horse and a progressive horse and we think we’re only half way there with him at the moment.

“I’ve always thought he was smart.  He’s got a lovely ground-eating action which he has shown all along.  Funnily enough he didn’t make his reserve at the sales because he wasn’t a good walker but walking is not his game now!”
