Fairer sex flying for Inglis

Top-class mares Alverta and Hot Danish completed a feature double for Inglis graduates at Rosehill on Saturday.

Alverta (6m Flying Spur – Grilse by Rahy) became the first Group 1 winner for trainer Paul Messara when she scored an on-pace victory in the G1 Coolmore Classic.  The mare was slated for stud last year but didn’t get in foal to Charge Forward.

She races in Arrowfield’s black and yellow silks after being passed-in for $20,000 at the 2005 Inglis Easter yearling sale.  It was the sixth elite triumph for Easter graduates in the last two weeks following Wanted, Zavite, Rock Classic, Zipping and Happy Zero.

Alverta had been working up to a G1 after winning the G2 AJC Breeders’ Classic and Listed Hawkesbury Guineas, QTC Brisbane Handicap and BRC Just Now Quality.

Her sire Flying Spur has 55 yearlings in the catalogue for next month’s Easter Sale.  Her USA bred dam Grilse has produced 6 foals for as many winners.  Her other black-type winner is the French Deputy gelding Revolte who was a G3 winner of a Singapore Guineas.

Grilse is owned by Darley and she has a yearling filly by Exceed and Excel, a filly foal by Flying Spur and was bred back to Exceed and Excel last year.

Hot Danish is the darling of Sydney punters and there was more joy for her legion of fans in the Group 2 Canterbury Stakes on Saturday.

Hot Danish (6m Nothin’ Leica Dane-Hot ‘n’ Breezy by Zephyr Zip) railed up in the straight to take her record to a dozen wins and over $1.2 million in prizemoney.  She is widely regarded as the best horse in Australia not to have won at G1 level but trainer Les Bridge will endeavour to rectify that one remaining blemish this time in.

Hot Danish was sold by Holbrook Thoroughbreds for $32,000 at the Inglis Scone yearling sale.  Her dam Hot ‘n’ Breezy won races at Randwick, Newcastle and Wyong.  She has a yearling sister to the punters’ pin-up and she was covered by Encosta de Lago last year.

The G1 meeting at Morphettville on Saturday provided another feature double for Inglis graduates of the fairer sex.

Rostova (Testa Rossa) returned to form with an exciting victory in the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes.  She cost $80,000 at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.

Small Minds (Canny Lad) scored a $31 shock in the in the Schweppes Oaks to give Patinack Farms trainer John Thompson his first G1 victory.  She was sold for $48,000 at the 2008 Inglis Scone yearling sale.

Small Minds is by Darley sire Canny Lad who suffered a setback a fortnight ago when his lightly-raced galloper King Pulse suffered a badly injured shoulder at Flemington.

The Mike Moroney trained gelding was heading back to the tie-up stalls after finishing a close fourth in the G1 Newmarket Hcp.  He took fright during a hail-storm that hit headquarters and his future is in serious doubt.
