Military Rose shot to favouritism for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes after a dominant victory in the Reisling Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday. The Gold Coast filly was racing first-up since a runaway success in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January.
Military Rose (2f General Nediym – Bella Maddelena by Flying Spur) would have demoralised connections of Solar Charged when she left the one-time Slipper favourite standing in the straight.
The winner was a $155,000 buy at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale and trainer Gillian Heinrich reckons there’s more improvement to come. “We always knew she was pretty good but to match up with them in the big smoke is fantastic.
“She’s pretty versatile. She can lead, get back or sit off the speed,” Heinrich added. “It’s nice to have a filly like that in the big races.”
Stand-in jockey Micheal Rodd, who will ride Beneteau in the Golden Slipper, said he feared Military Rose. “She’s definitely the filly to beat. We saw what she did in the Magic Millions and she’s only going to improve. That’s a worry for the others.”
Military Rose will become the first filly in history to complete the Magic Millions – Golden Slipper double if she is successful at Rosehill on April 3. Dance Hero (2004) and Phelan Ready (2009) claimed the Magic Millions – Golden Slipper double but they were both geldings.
Military Rose ran her rivals ragged with a near four length victory in the Magic Millions. She is by deceased Widden sire General Nediym and hails from the family of Zeditave, Melito and leading freshman sire Jet Spur.
Middlebrook Valley Lodge bred Military Rose and they sold her Testa Rossa yearling half-sister for $150,000 to Queensland based Boomer Bloodstock at this year’s Magic Millions yearling sale.
