Perth stakes winner Famous Roman has been retired to stand at Cromartry Park at Gingin in 2011.
Famous Roman (6h Danetime – Famous Friend by Marooned) was raced by Sam Trimboli and won 7 races from 1300m to 1800m with trainers Ken Williamson and Jim Taylor at Ascot and Brian Mayfield-Smith at Flemington.
Agent Damien Wyer said there had been inquiries from Eastern States studs but the stallion would receive better opportunities in Western Australia. “He has a beautiful temperament,” Taylor said. “And he probably should have won a Railway.”
Cromartry Park owners Colin and Olga Mackenzie already stand young sires Lords A Leaping (Zabeel) and Redoutable (Redoute’s Choice).
Bred by Graham and Christine Daws of Dawson Stud, Famous Roman was originally sold at the 2006 Perth Magic Millions for $75,000. He was pin-hooked for $121,000 later that year at the 2YO HIT Sale.
Famous Roman won his maiden at Ascot in November 2007 and quickly graduated to a Listed victory in the Aquanita Stakes the following month
At the 2008 Ascot summer carnival, Famous Roman created a State record for 1500m in the G3 R J Peters Stakes at Ascot. He came from last nearing the home turn to defeat G1 winner Gilded Venom and Melbourne raider Pillar Of Hercules in 1.26.39s.
Venturing to Victoria in 2009, he was placed in Listed company at Flemington and was close-up in Group 1 races at Caulfield when fourth to Turffontein in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and seventh to Allez Wonder in the Toorak Handicap.
Returning home last year, Famous Roman hit top gear in the Listed Northerly Stakes and he doubled up in the G2 Lee-Steere Stakes.
His main mission at the 2010 Ascot carnival was the G1 Railway Stakes but the million-dollar race turned out to be a gift for Gathering. Visiting hoop Craig Williams taught the locals a lesson that day when he rode a waiting race in front on the Patinack galloper.
Famous Roman was carted wide on the corner but came home with the fastest sectional to finish second to Gathering.
Danetime, an Irish bred son of Danehill, has been consistently ranked among the leading sires in Europe and Australia since his premature death from a ruptured artery at Alwyn Park in September 2005.
His sire sons out here include the G1 Prix Morny winner Myboycharlie (Vinery) and the WA based stallions So Secret (Rangeview Stud) and Vital Equine (Touchstone Farm). His half-brother He’s A Decoy (In The Wings) stands at Westbury Park near Pinjarra.
Famous Roman is a half-brother to Malaysian Listed winner Power For Glory (Danewin) and South African stakes performer Majestic Legend (Royal Academy). Their dam Famous Friend is a winning half-sister to G3 Strickland Stakes winner Timeless Action (Serheed).
