Mamool, a beaten favourite in the 2003 Melbourne Cup, sired his first Group 1 winner when Lips Poison was successful in the German 1000 Guineas on Sunday.
Lips Poison (3f Mamool – Lips Plane by Ashkalani) gave trainer Andreas Löwe his fourth classic at Düsseldorf. The Cologne – based conditioner sent out odds-on favourite Djumama (Aussie Rules) but she made no impression in the straight.
Lips Poison was always well-placed under French jockey Davy Bonilla and had a length to spare over Wolkenburg (Big Shuffle) and Temida (Oratorio).
The Guineas winner went into the classic fresh from a narrow loss to the Polish-trained colt Exciting Life (Titus Livius) in the Listed Scherping-Rennen at Baden-Baden.
Lowe bought her for just 2,400 euros at the German yearling sale in October 2009. She is a half-sister to German stakes winner Lips Arrow (Big Shuffle).
Mamool (In The Wings) earned Group 1 victories for Godolphin in the Grosser Preis von Baden and Preis von Europa in September 2003. He started a well-backed $6.50 favourite in Makybe Diva’s first Melbourne Cup but pulled up lame.
Sheikh Mohammed sent him back to Flemington twelve months later and, after a slow getaway, he did marginally better when beaten seven lengths by Makybe Diva the second time around.
Mamool stands at Gestut Graditz in Germany. His oldest are four year-olds and he has sired 19 winners at a 39% strike-rate.
